Police appeal for assistance over child approach - Gymea

Police are appealing for information from the community following reports a teenager was approached by an unknown man as he walked to school in the Sutherland Shire this morning.

About 8.40am (Wednesday 20 March 2019), a 14-year-old boy was walking past the shops on North West Arm Road, Gymea, when an unknown man, who had slowed down a van, offered him a lift.

The teenager declined and continued to walk along the road. The van drove away a short time later and was last seen turning into Wanganui Road.

The incident was reported to staff after the teenager arrived at school, and subsequently reported to police.

Officers from Sutherland Shire Police Area Command have commenced inquiries, which include a significant canvas of the local area.

As their inquiries continue, police are appealing for assistance from the community to identify the man and/or vehicle, which was in the area at the time of the incident.

The man is described as being aged in his 60s or 70s, with pale skin and grey hair. He was driving an older model white Toyota van, with PVC pipe on the roof over the passenger side, and black on yellow registration plates.
