Police appeal for information following West Footscray factory fire

Detectives from the Arson and Explosives Squad are appealing for public assistance as part of their investigation into a factory fire in West Footscray last month, Victoria Police say.

The fire started at the Somerville Road business shortly after 5am on Thursday, 30 August.

A number of materials inside the factory fuelled the fire, including acetone drums, cannisters and scrap metal.

Over 140 firefighters were engaged in fighting the fire, which MFB states took 17 hours to bring under control.

On Saturday, 1 September, the investigation was officially handed over the Arson and Explosive Squad.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and police are still to confirm if the fire is suspicious.

Given the nature of the scene, investigators believe it may still be some time before they are able to completely access the property and undertake all the required forensic work.

Detectives are keen to speak to anyone who has footage of the fire or the factory in the lead up to the blaze, including CCTV, dashcam footage, or mobile phone video.

Investigators would also like to speak to anyone with any other knowledge of the fire or witnessed any suspicious activity in the area around that time.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
