Police appeal for information in 34 year-old Brisbane cold case homicide

Detectives investigating the 1985 murder of Richard Campbell at his Tarragindi home are hoping an appeal from his family and the re-release of a comfit image will help them solve the 34-year-old cold case homicide.

Richard Campbell was 85 at the time when, on the morning of June 13, 1985, he was found deceased with fatal head wounds inside his Pope Street home after ambulance attended following a triple 0 call from an anonymous man.

Investigators believe Richard's death may be related to a robbery as his house was found ransacked and police believe a sum of money was stolen.

Detective Inspector Damien Hansen of the Homicide Group said investigators were confident the fresh appeal for information and modern-day investigative methods could lead to a breakthrough in the case.

"We are using forensic science, including DNA analysis, to its full potential in a way that was not possible at the time of the murder," Detective Inspector Hansen said.

"We are speaking with potential witnesses and believe there are more people who know what happened to Richard.

"We urge people who hold information to come forward now and provide family with the answers they deserve."

A witness reported seeing a man leaving Richard's front yard on the morning of the murder and a comfit was created on the day, based on witness descriptions.

Investigators from the Cold Case Investigation Team are re-circulating this image and would like to speak to anyone who may know the identity of this person or anyone who may have information about the crime.

A $250,000 reward remains in place for information which leads to the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons responsible for their murders.

The Government reward further offers an opportunity for indemnity against prosecution for any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the murder, who first gives such information.

Police have released a comfit image of a man seen leaving Richard Campbell's house on the morning of the murder.
