Police are responding to serious crash - Katherine

Traffic diversions remain in place in Katherine today following a serious crash on Katherine Terrace overnight.

Two men, aged 24 and 19, were airlifted to Royal Darwin Hospital with critical injuries, and another two men aged 20 and 32, are in Katherine Hospital in a stable condition after a vehicle believed to be travelling at high speeds crashed into a light pole around 11pm.

Police, St John Ambulance, NT Fire and Rescue Service, Power and Water and Careflight all responded to the incident. Road closures and traffic diversions were established and are expected to remain in place for most of the day while investigations are carried out. Motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible and to follow all instructions from authorities.

Superintendent Craig Garland said, "The response from members of multiple agencies to this incident was outstanding.

"The teams did an exceptional job in difficult circumstances, their brave actions in extinguishing the fire, extracting the injured and getting them to medical treatment is commendable."

Major Crash and Katherine detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash incident.
