Police Arrest Man After Croydon House Fire

A man has been arrested as investigations continue into a house fire Croydon this morning.

Emergency services had been called to Irrara Street just after 4am (Wednesday 28 May 2025), and found a house well-alight.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews attended and extinguished the blaze with the body of a man located inside. While yet to be formally identified, police suspect it is that of an 80-year-old man who lived there.

Officers attached to Burwood Police Area Command established a crime scene and made a public appeal for assistance to locate a 50-year-old man, who also lived at the home.

About 7.40pm (Wednesday 28 May 2025), that man was arrested by officers attached to Brisbane Water Police District at Woy Woy.

Police will allege when searched a machete was found concealed in his pants.

The man is now in custody at Gosford Police Station with detectives from Burwood enroute to speak with him.

Superintendent Christine McDonald paid tribute to the combined efforts of Burwood Police Area Command assisted by other specialist and regional commands across NSW.

"This has been an intensive few hours to locate a man we believe can assist with our inquiries into what we allege is a suspicious fire, and I thank my officers and all other officers who provided their assistance," she said.
