Police arrest man after pursuit across Sydney’s west and south-west

A man has been arrested in Smithfield following a pursuit in a stolen vehicle across Sydney’s south and south-west this morning.

About 8.00am today (Monday 17 January 2022), Police were notified after a truck was reported stolen overnight from a home in Lidcombe.

Following inquiries, police attempted to stop the truck travelling along the Western Motorway near Reservoir Road, Blacktown, about 8.40am.

The driver allegedly failed to stop, and a pursuit was initiated.

The pursuit was terminated and re-engaged a number of times throughout west and south-west Sydney, with attempts – including the deployment of road spikes – made to stop the truck.

The vehicle was then monitored by PolAir to Smithfield, where the truck was successfully stopped at the intersection of the Cumberland Highway and Sturt Street by officers attached to the Tactical Operations Unit (TOU).

When police approached the vehicle, the 33-year-old male driver allegedly resisted and attempted to assault the officers.

A number of tactical options were used to effect the arrest of the man, who was treated as the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

He has been taken to hospital for treatment for a shoulder injury.

Investigations are continuing and anyone with information or dash cam footage of the incident is urged to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report information via NSW Police social media pages.
