Police arrest three after Aintree aggravated carjacking

Local police and the Dog Squad have arrested three people following an aggravated carjacking in Aintree this morning.

Officers were called to the intersection of Woodlea Boulevard and Leakes Road following reports a taxi driver had been assaulted about 4am.

Police have been told the driver picked up a woman and two men in the Ballarat area and agreed to drive them to Sydenham before a dispute over the fare ensued.

The group demanded their money back and allegedly punched the driver to the back of the head before threatening him with a pole.

One offender allegedly took the victim's car keys until receiving the cash.

The group then fled on foot towards Taylors Road.

A dog squad unit quickly responded and tracked down the offenders who were hiding in a field.

Two Sydenham men, aged 22 and 28, and a 28-year-old Ballarat woman were arrested and are currently assisting police with their enquiries.

The 32-year-old driver was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.
