Police Arrest Two After Copper Theft In Altona

Police have arrested two men following a theft in Altona last night.

Officers were called to reports of a theft in progress at a demolition site on Modal Place about 9.20pm on 7 January.

Two vehicles, a Jeep utility and white Toyota Hiace van, were allegedly spotted by responding officers leaving the scene.

The van was followed to Freya Drive in Williams Landing where it was allegedly dumped.

The two alleged occupants fled on foot but were arrested nearby.

A 50-year-old West Footscray man has been charged with theft, trespass, handle stolen goods and possess methylamphetamine.

A 47-year-old St Albans man has been charged with theft, trespass, handle stolen goods and commit indictable offence while on bail.

Both men were bailed to appear before Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 6 August.

Police allegedly located stolen copper wiring and methamphetamine in the vehicle.

The Jeep utility remains outstanding.
