Police arrest two after police car rammed as police investigate carjacking at Lake Illawarra

A police vehicle was rammed and several other cars damaged, after police arrested two people who were allegedly involved in a carjacking yesterday at Gerringong.

Just after 8am (Tuesday 25 June 2019), police noticed a Mitsubishi travelling north on Princes Highway Broughton, which was allegedly involved in a carjacking at Gerringong yesterday about 4.45pm (Monday 24 June 2019).

Police attached to South Coast Police District, Lake Illawarra Police District, Traffic and Highway Patrol, Dog Unit and Polair assisted with the operation.

Due to safety concerns police did not engage in a pursuit; however, the Mitsubishi continued travelling along the Princes Highway and collided with another vehicle.

The occupants of the Mitsubishi drove the damaged car to a property in Austral Park Road where they allegedly stole a Silver Kia and continued driving towards the intersection of the Illawarra Highway and the M1, when it was forced to stop in heavy traffic.

Polair assisted and monitored the stolen car informing police of the location. Officers attempted to intercept the Kia whilst it was stationary in heavy traffic, however, the driver rammed another car out of the way. It is further alleged the driver rammed a police car and continued south on the M1.

The stolen Kia continued travelling on the M1 towards the intersection of Creamery Road where it has collided with three other cars, causing minor damage.

The Kia stopped at the intersection at the occupants ran from the car. Police initiated a short pursuit and a 24-year-old man, and a 28-year-old woman were arrested.

They have been taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station where they are currently assisting with inquiries.

Two police officers from the damaged police car were treated at the scene for minor injuries. No one else was injured.
