Police arrest two in stolen car in St Kilda

Two people have been arrested after eagle-eyed police spotted a stolen car in St Kilda this morning.

It's alleged a Nissan X-Trail complete with the owner's wallet and car keys inside was taken from outside a Beaumaris Parade address in Highett about 1.30am.

About an hour later, the owner realised their vehicle was missing after they were alerted to purchases being made on their bank card at a convenience store and reported the matter to police.

St Kilda officers were out on patrol when they noticed the stolen X-Trail sitting at a red light in South Melbourne shortly before 3am.

They followed the vehicle to Chapel Street where several police cars boxed it in and the two occupants were arrested.

A 20-year-old woman and 25-year-old man are in custody, assisting police with their investigations.
