Police charge man after allegedly assaulting police in Woodburn

A man has been charged after assaulting police officers in Woodburn last night.

About 8.55pm on Saturday 2 March 2019, police were called to Bank Street, North Woodburn, after reports of a man acting suspiciously around a number of residences.

Officers from Richmond Police District attended and located a 39-year-old man at the intersection of Bank Street and Forrest Road, who allegedly became uncooperative when police approached him.

The pair of Senior Constables, aged 52 and 38, attempted to restrain the man, before a struggle ensued, resulting in a taser being deployed.

Police handcuffed the man and attempted to place him in a caged truck, however he continued to resist and assault the officers, resulting in OC spray being deployed.

Nearby members of the public rendered assistance to police, during which time, a 52-year-old man was bitten on the finger.

The 39-year-old man was secured in the caged truck and taken to Lismore Police Station.

He was charged with enter enclosed land not prescribed premises without lawful excuse, resist or hinder police, assault police (x2), and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was refused bail to appear at Lismore Bail Court today, where he was again refused bail to reappear at the same court tomorrow (Monday 4 March 2019).

The 52-year-old member of the public was taken to Lismore Base Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries to his thumb, and has since been released.

The 52-year-old Senior Constable was taken to Lismore Base Hospital to be treated for minor injuries, and the 38-year-old Senior Constable did not require treatment.
