Police Charge Man After Assault At Newcastle

A man will face court charged following an alleged assault near Newcastle earlier today.

About 7.20am today (Wednesday 10 December 2025), emergency services were called to a unit on Watkins Street, Merewether, following reports of an assault.

At the scene, police were told two men were involved in an altercation where one of the men was allegedly injured with a knife.

A 46-year-old man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for an injury to his head and was taken to the John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.

A crime scene was established and inquiries into the incident commenced by Newcastle City Police.

Following extensive inquiries, officers arrested a 46-year-old man on Ocean Street, Merewether, about 2.30pm today (Wednesday 10 December 2025).

He was taken to Newcastle Police Station where he was charged with reckless wounding, armed with intent commit indictable offence, and common assault.

He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 2 tomorrow (Thursday 11 December 2025).
