Police charge man after car crashes through police station fence at Lake Illawarra

A man has been charged after allegedly crashing a car into a police station fence and setting a car alight earlier this year.

About 4.50am on Wednesday 8 January 2020, a car crashed through fencing at Albion Park Police Station on Tongarra Road.

The vehicle left the scene and a short time later, a vehicle parked in the car park was noticed alight.

Shortly after, a green Subaru Liberty was located on fire approximately 400m east of the police station on Tongarra Road.

Fire and Rescue NSW attended and extinguished both blazes.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District attended and established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist forensic officers.

Following extensive inquiries, police attended a correctional facility in Silverwater and charged a 28-year-old man with intentionally damage property and intentionally destroy property by fire.

It's alleged the man reversed a green Subaru Liberty into the fence of the police station, before approaching a black Holden Commodore and setting it alight. The man fled the scene and the green Subaru Liberty was found engulfed in flames a short distance away.

The man is due to appear in Port Kembla Local Court on Wednesday 7 October 2020.
