Police charge man after church fire at Auburn

A man has appeared in court today charged with arson after a fire at an Auburn church yesterday.

About 3pm (Thursday 3 March 2023), emergency services were called to the grounds of a church on Provincial Street, Auburn, following reports of a fire.

Fire and Rescue NSW attended and found a hall at the rear of the property alight.

The blaze, which had destroyed the structure, was extinguished. There was no report of any injuries.

Officers attached to Auburn Police Area Command spoke to a 27-year-old man nearby, who was placed under arrest and taken to Burwood Police Station.

He was charged with possess prohibited drug and breach of bail before being taken to hospital for treatment.

Following further inquiries today (Friday 3 March 2023), he was also charged with a further offence of damage property by fire upon his return to the station.

The man was refused bail to appear at Burwood Local Court today.
