Police charge man after critical injury assault in South Yarra

Stonnington Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man following a critical injury assault in South Yarra late Friday night.

The 30-year-old man has been charged with one count of intentionally cause serious injury in circumstances of gross violence.

The charges follow an incident where a man was walking along Chapel Street when he was knocked to the ground in an alleged unprovoked attack on 17 December, about 10.35pm.

While on the ground it is alleged the man was kicked and stomped on around his head and face.

The assailant ran from the scene before being restrained by witnesses until police arrived.

The injured 66-year-old South Yarra man was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Detectives fronted the South Yarra man before Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Saturday for a filing hearing.

He was remanded in custody to appear before Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 16 March 2022.
