Police charge man after driving at police in Altona Meadows

A man has been charged after he allegedly drove towards Public Order Response Team officers at a service station in Altona Meadows this morning.

It is alleged the driver of a car ignored a police direction to turn off his vehicle and drove towards police at a service station on Point Cook Road just after 1.20am.

An approaching police officer discharged his firearm while taking evasive action.

The car was intercepted by detectives from Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit on Harrison Court after a short pursuit and the driver was arrested.

No one was injured as a result of the incident.

A 64-year-old Altona Meadows man was charged with:

• reckless conduct endangering life

• dangerous driving whilst being pursued by police

• fail to stop upon request

• drive in manner dangerous

• drive at speed dangerous

• commit an indictable offence whilst on bail

While committing the offences the man was also found to be in breach of the directions issued by the Chief Health Officer, declared in Victoria. These directions have been enacted to help stop the spread of Coronavirus.

The matter is expected to be heard at a Magistrates' court today.

As per standard protocol when a police firearm is discharged, Professional Standards Command have been notified.
