A man will appear in court today, charged with multiple offences after fleeing from a vehicle stop in the state's south-west yesterday.
Just before 5.30pm (Friday 22 November 2019), officers attached to Dareton Traffic and Highway Patrol Command stopped a Holden Commodore vehicle on Beverley Street, Wentworth, north of Mildura on the NSW/ Victoria border, for the purpose of a random breath test.
Officers spoke to the passenger, a 29-year-old man, who was arrested for an outstanding warrant.
The man has pushed past police and fled on foot, pursued by officers.
The man is alleged to have entered a unit at a retirement village, damaging property, before being found hiding under a vehicle in the yard.
An officer attempted to detain the man with the assistance of two members of the public, when a 66-year-old-man was punched in the face and bitten on the finger during the violent struggle.
Further police attended to assist, and the 29-year-old man was arrested.
As a result of the confrontation, the man sustained a laceration to his leg. He was taken to Mildura Base Hospital along with the 66-year-old man for treatment.
A number of officers were also injured. A senior constable suffered a dislocated shoulder and was treated at Mildura Base Hospital. A sergeant suffered a knee injury and three constable's sustained minor injuries.
Upon his release from hospital, the man was returned to Dareton Police Station and charged with 14 offences including:
• Assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm
• Escape police custody
• Enter enclosed land not prescribed premises without lawful excuse (x7)
• Aggravated enter dwelling with intent – knowing people there
• Resist officer in execution of duty (x2)
• Assault occasioning actual bodily harm
• Resist person aiding officer
Three outstanding warrants were also executed, and he has been refused bail to appear in Broken Hill via AVL today (Saturday 23 November 2019).
