Police charge man after handgun located in backpack - Riverstone

A man has been charged after a handgun was found in a backpack in Sydney's north-west earlier today.

Officers from Riverstone Police Area Command were called to a home on Brisbane Street, Riverstone, following reports of suspicious activity, just after 11am yesterday (Saturday 14 August 2021).

Police spoke to a 39-year-old man at the front premises. Checks were conducted where it was ascertained he was the subject of a Firearms Prohibition Order (FPO).

Following a search of the Matraville man's backpack, police located and seized a Glock handgun, house breaking implements and other items.

It was also established that the man had breached the current Public Health Orders by travelling to the area on public transport and failing to wear a face covering.

He was arrested and taken to Riverstone Police Station where he was charged with Not comply with noticed direction re s 7/8/9 - COVID-19, Not wear fitted face covering - prescribed outdoor gathering, Possess unauthorised pistol, Possess unregistered firearm-pistol, Not keep firearm safely-pistol and Acquire etc pistol-subject to firearms prohibition order.

The man was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court later today (Sunday 15 August 2021).
