Police charge man after off-duty officer assaulted in Padstow road-rage incident

A man has been charged with over 20 offences after an of an off-duty police officer was allegedly assaulted during a road-rage incident at Padstow.

About 6.45pm (Sunday 7 February 2021), the officer was driving on Fairford Road at Padstow when he witnessed a silver Toyota Hilux driving erratically.

The officer followed the Hilux onto Davies Road, before the vehicle swerved and stopped in the middle of the road.

The Hilux driver exited the vehicle, before approaching and allegedly verbally abusing the officer who was seated in his vehicle.

When the officer identified himself, he was allegedly punched in the face through the driver's side window and threatened with a knife.

A member of the public stopped to assist the officer – who is attached to a command in the Central Metropolitan Region – before the Hilux driver fled the scene.

The officer reported the incident to officers from Bankstown Police Area Command who commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Following inquiries, police executed a search warrant at a home on Mona Street, South Granville, earlier today (Monday 8 February 2021).

During the search, police seized a vehicle and several other items relevant to the investigation.

Officers arrested a 27-year-old man at the home, and he was taken to Granville Police Station.

The man has been charged with:

  • Armed with intent to commit indictable offence
  • Possess ammunition (x2)
  • Malicious damage
  • Assault police in the execution of duty
  • Possess unauthorised pistol (x2)
  • Not keep firearm safe (x2)
  • Acquire firearm part without authority (x4)
  • Possess a barrel without authority of licence/permit
  • Possess or use prohibited weapon without permit (x2)
  • Knowingly deal with proceeds of crime
  • Possess/attempt to prescribe restricted substance (x2)
  • Supply prohibited drug
  • Possess prohibited drug

He was refused bail and will appear in Parramatta Local Court today (Tuesday 9 February 2021).
