Police charge man after police vehicle damaged at Waterloo

A man will face court after a marked police vehicle was damaged in Sydney's inner city yesterday.

About 1230am on Sunday 24 August, a 46-year-old man was walking home on Wellington Street, Waterloo when he was allegedly robbed by a 48-year-old man armed with a crowbar.

Police have been told, the first man was carrying a bag of bird seed when the second man stopped him and allegedly demanded he hand over money and the bag.

Meanwhile, a passing ride-share driver, travelling on Wellington Street, sounded his horn after seeing the two men standing on the road. It's alleged the armed man then turned and hit the windscreen of the car with the crowbar.

Concerned for his welfare, the first man handed over his bird seed before flagging down a passing police vehicle attached to South Sydney Police Area Command.

Upon seeing the officers, it's alleged the second man charged at the marked car, smashing its side windows and windscreen with the crowbar. Moments later, police sprayed the man with capsicum spray, and he dropped the weapon.

The man was arrested and taken to Mascot Police Station where he was charged with robbery armed with an offensive weapon and two counts of destroy or damage property less than $2000.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Central Local Court on Monday 24 August 2020.

Investigations are continuing.
