Police charge man after posing as police officer and searching people - Strathfield

A man has been charged after allegedly impersonating a police officer and searching members of the public in Strathfield at the weekend.

About 6pm yesterday (Sunday 3 May 2020), a 46-year-old man was approached by a man in Raw Square, who allegedly claimed to be a police officer before producing a silver coloured badge within a black wallet.

The man complied when told he would be searched, and he was patted down.

Inquiries suggest the man claiming to be a police officer has allegedly done this to between five and ten other people in the area before leaving.

Officers from Burwood Police Area Command were alerted to the incident and commenced an investigation.

A short time later, a 26-year-old man was arrested at Lidcombe Railway Station.

He was taken to Burwood Police Station and upon searching the man, a black leather, flip-style wallet with a silver coloured badge was allegedly located.

The Rydalmere man was charged with impersonate police officer and exercise powers/functions.

He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court today (Monday 4 May 2020).
