Police charge man after pursuit - Chippendale

A man has been charged following a police pursuit at Chippendale yesterday.

About 8.50pm (Friday 27 August 2021), officers from Surry Hills Police Area Command Proactive Crime Team were patrolling Cleveland Street, when they stopped a Ford Focus sedan as part of ongoing COVID-19 compliance checks.

After the vehicle stopped it will be alleged that the male driver refused to wind down the window and communicate with officers.

Police will allege the driver accelerated from the scene as one of the officers opened the rear offside passenger door yelling for the driver to stop and ran a short distance with the vehicle before it drove away.

Police initiated a pursuit which continued into Myrtle Street where the police vehicle was involved in a minor collision with another vehicle.

At the intersection of Cleveland and Boundary Streets, the Ford stopped due to heavy traffic.

As officers attempted to remove the driver from the vehicle, he resisted arrest and while doing so took hold of an officer's firearm which was holstered. He was subsequently arrested with the assistance of other police.

There were no reports of any serious injuries.

The man was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for mandatory testing.

He was later taken to Surry Hills Police Station and charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly, resist officer in execution of duty, use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, not comply with noticed direction re section 7/8/9 – COVID19 and drive recklessly/furious or speed/manner dangerous.

The 32-year-old Maroubra man was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court today (Saturday 28 August 2021).
