Police charge man after pursuit in stolen vehicle at Berkeley

A man, wanted on an outstanding warrant, has been charged following a pursuit in a stolen vehicle near Wollongong yesterday.

Just after 7pm (Monday 11 January 2021), officers from Lake Illawarra Police District were conducting patrols of Warilla when they located an Audi A6 on Ponsford Street, that had been reported stolen from Dapto earlier the same day.

The man in the driver seat noticed police approaching the vehicle and drove away. A pursuit was initiated and terminated a short time later due to safety concerns.

With assistance from PolAir, the vehicle was located in bushland near Baronga Avenue, Berkeley.

Following inquiries, police arrested a 29-year-old man hiding in a home on Nannawilli Street, about 8pm. He was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station.

During a search of the house, police seized a Yamaha motorcycle that had been reported stolen, clothing and a bag containing the Audi key. The items will undergo further examination.

The man was charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period and drive conveyance taken without consent of owner.

An outstanding arrest warrant relating to fraud offences was also executed.

The Berkeley man was refused bail to appear before Wollongong Local Court today (Tuesday 12 January 2021).
