Police charge man after siege on luxury yacht

A man has been arrested following a stand-off on a yacht in Victoria Harbour yesterday. (26 May)

Police were called to the vessel, which is berthed in Docklands, around 2pm after reports of a man brandishing a pole on the luxury boat.

Specialist police units, including the Critical Incident Response Team, boarded the boat and negotiated with a 29-year-old French national.

It is alleged the man was trying to start the vessel before barricading himself in the cabin when police arrived.

The man was remanded overnight.

It is also alleged he attempted to escape from custody when his cell door was opened this morning.

The man allegedly punched a male sergeant in the face while attempting to flee.

The sergeant received minor injuries and was able to resume his duties.

The man has been charged with trespass and criminal damage to the boat, attempt to escape from a police gaol, assault and resist police.

The man will be presented at Melbourne Magistrates' Court this morning.
