Police charge man after suspicious fire - East Gosford

A man has been charged following a suspicious unit fire on the Central Coast overnight.

About 8.15pm (Tuesday 8 February 2022), emergency services were called to a unit complex on Russell Street, East Gosford, following reports one of the units was well alight.

Crews from Fire & Rescue NSW attended and extinguished the blaze. All residents were safely evacuated from the building.

One of the units was destroyed, while a number of neighbouring units received extensive damaged.

Officers from Brisbane Water Police District commenced inquiries before they attended one of the units and spoke with a 57-year-old man about 12.30am (Wednesday 9 February 2022).

Whilst speaking with him, police allegedly observed a number of cannabis plants inside the home.

The man was arrested and taken to Gosford Police Station, where he was charged with damage property by fire, cultivate prohibited plant and break and enter house destroy property.

He was refused bail to appear at Gosford Local Court later today.

A search warrant has been applied for and granted, with investigators continuing inquiries at the unit block today.
