Police charge man after Swanston Street assault

Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man following a serious assault in Melbourne's CBD this month.

Police have been told the victim, a 57-year-old Richmond man, was at a function at a hotel on Swanston Street with work colleagues on Wednesday, 2 March.

It is alleged the victim was assaulted as he left the venue about 11.50pm.

The victim was taken to hospital with serious facial injuries.

A 35-year-old Moorabbin man handed himself in to detectives this morning, following an appeal for information on 9 March.

He has since been charged with intentionally cause injury and recklessly cause injury and two counts of unlawful assault.

He has been bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 15 August.
