Police charge man over 2015 Christmas Island riot

A 28-year-old Sudanese national is due to face Perth Magistrates Court today (5 December) charged over his alleged role in a riot at the Christmas Island Detention Centre in October 2015.

The man was taken into custody by Australian Federal Police yesterday (Wednesday 4 December) on an outstanding arrest warrant.

Police will allege the man, then aged 24, was among detainees who took part in the disturbance in which a group armed themselves with make-shift weapons and threatened guards.

SERCO Emergency Response Team officers were allegedly assaulted and building infrastructure destroyed during the incident.

The man has been charged with:

  • one count of taking part in a riot, contrary to section 65 of the Criminal Code Act Compilation Act 1913 (WA) (CI);
  • one count of manufacture, possess, use or distribute a weapon whilst detained in immigration detention, contrary to section 197B of the Migration Act 1958.
