Police charge man over carjacking - Leichhardt

A man will face court today charged over an alleged armed carjacking in Sydney's Inner West last year.

About 4.50pm on Thursday 20 August 2020, a 30-year-old man was sitting in a Range Rover on Tebbutt Street, Leichhardt, when an unknown man opened the passenger door and sat next to him.

The man allegedly produced a firearm and threatened the driver, telling him to get out of the vehicle.

The armed man drove off in the Range Rover, while a second man followed in a black Mercedes.

Detectives from Leichhardt Police Area Command established Strike Force Deenyi to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Following inquiries, a 29-year-old man was arrested at a Silverwater facility at about 10am yesterday (Tuesday 2 March 2021).

He was charged with robbery with dangerous weapon and remanded in custody to appear at Central Local Court via video link today (Wednesday 3 March 2021).

Inquiries continue to identity a second man in connection to the incident.

He's described as being of Caucasian appearance, 35-40 years old, medium build with short dark hair. He was last seen wearing a yellow high visibility T-shirt.
