Police charge man over drink spiking at Newtown

A man has been charged over an alleged drink spiking incident at a hotel in Newtown last week.

On Friday 22 November 2019, a 27-year-old woman attended a hotel in Newtown with friends.

The woman sat at a table with the group and was drinking a cocktail before leaving her drink unattended to use the bathroom.

Police will allege a 28-year-old man sat down at the table and leaned over the woman's drink and spiked it with GHB.

The woman returned to her seat and consumed the beverage before collapsing.

She was taken to hospital where blood tests later confirmed the drug GHB in her system.

The matter was reported to officers at Inner West Police Area Command and an investigation was commenced.

About 1pm yesterday (Tuesday 26 November 2019), the 28-year-old man was arrested at his place of employment.

He was taken to Day Street Police Station where he was charged with administer poison etc intend injure/cause distress/pain.

He was refused bail and will appear in Central Local Court today (Wednesday 27 November 2019).
