Police charge man over fatal crash near Ballina

A man has been charged after a fatal crash on the Far North Coast earlier this year.

About 2.30pm on Saturday 8 January 2022, emergency services responded to reports of a two-vehicle crash between a van and a utility on the Bruxner Highway at Uralba, about 10km west of Ballina.

The driver and only occupant of the utility – a 61-year-old man from Lindendale – died at the scene.

The 27-year-old man driving the van was trapped and had to be treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being released and airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

A 26-year-old male passenger was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Lismore Base Hospital with minor injuries.

Officers from Richmond Police District secured a crime scene which was examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit who commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the crash.

Following inquiries, a 27-year-old East Ballina man was today (Wednesday 1 June 2022), charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, and negligent driving occasioning death.

He was granted bail to appear at Ballina Local Court on Thursday 14 July 2022.
