Police charge man over Punchbowl attempted armed robbery

Bankstown detectives have charged a man over an alleged attempted armed robbery in Sydney's south west last month.

About 5.25pm on Friday 22 May 2020, a man entered a mixed business on Wattle Street, Punchbowl, and allegedly threatened a female employee with a firearm, while demanding money.

The man fled the store on foot without any proceeds.

The 29-year-old woman, who was uninjured in the incident, alerted police.

Officers from Bankstown Police Area Command attended and established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist forensic police.

Following extensive inquiries and a public appeal last week, detectives, assisted by the Tactical Operations Unit, executed a search warrant at a home on Telopea Street, Punchbowl, about 6am today (Thursday 4 June 2020).

A 34-year-old man was arrested at the home and taken to Bankstown Police Station.

He was charged with attempt assault with intent to rob armed with dangerous weapon.

The Punchbowl man was refused bail to appear at Campbelltown Local Court tomorrow (Friday 5 June 2020).
