Police Charge Man Over Theft From ATMs At Broken Hill

A man has been charged following an investigation into the alleged theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars from ATMs in the state's far west.

Last week, detectives attached to Barrier Police District commenced an investigation after reports more than $700,000 cash was unaccounted for from ATMs in the Broken Hill area.

Following inquiries, about 1.30pm yesterday (Tuesday 26 August 2025) investigators executed a search warrant at a home in Broken Hill, seizing digital devices, ATM security tags and keys.

While executing the warrant, a 32-year-old man was seen driving into the street before driving off after seeing police.

The vehicle was stopped nearby on Cummins Street and the man was arrested.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle, police allegedly seized $6,235 cash, ATM security tags and keys.

The man was arrested and taken to Broken Hill Police Station where he was charged nine counts of larceny greater than $15,000, and knowingly deal with proceeds of crime.

Police will allege in court that a man allegedly accessed ATMs as part of his employment, depositing over $375,000 directly into personal and business accounts.

He was granted conditional bail to appear in in Broken Hill Local Court on Tuesday 9 September 2025.
