Police charge man with assaulting police officer - Ultimo

A man has been charged after a police officer was allegedly assaulted during an arrest in Sydney's CBD overnight.

About 11.40pm (Monday 15 March 2021), officers attached to Sydney City Police Area Command were conducting routine patrols on Harris Street, Ultimo, when they stopped a Toyota Corolla for the purpose of a random breath test.

The driver, a 19-year-old man, refused to comply and was placed under arrest for the purpose of a breath analysis.

During the arrest, the man allegedly became physically aggressive with officers and attempted to choke a male constable.

The man was taken to Day Street Police Station where he was charged with assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, assault officer in execution of duty, resist officer in execution of duty, refuse or fail to submit to breath analysis, learner/P1/P2 licence holder use mobile phone while driving and refuse or fail to submit to breath test.

He was refused bail to appear before Central Local Court today (Tuesday 16 March 2021).

The constable suffered cuts to his face and injuries to his right hand. He was taken to St Vincent's Hospital for treatment and has since been released.
