A man will appear in court today charged after allegedly assaulting police and resisting arrest during a vehicle stop in Sydney's CBD yesterday.
About 9.40pm (Friday 19 March 2021), officers from Eastern Suburbs Traffic and Highway Patrol were conducting a proactive traffic operation, when they attempted to stop a Toyota Starlet on Elizabeth Street for a random breath test.
The driver initially failed to pull over when directed, and instead stopped in an active lane of traffic. The driver verbally abused officers, refusing to comply with directions.
When a male sergeant attempted to remove the key from the vehicle's ignition, he was assaulted, before the driver accelerated away, striking the sergeant and a senior constable. The officers were uninjured.
The Toyota was stopped a short time later on Liverpool Street, where the driver continued to be aggressive towards police and not comply with directions.
With the assistance of further police, the 34-year-old man was arrested and taken to Surry Hills Police Station.
He was charged with assault officer in execution of duty, resist officer in execution of duty, destroy or damage property, fail to comply with request or signal to stop vehicle, use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention and drive recklessly/furious or speed manner dangerous.
Additionally, the man was charged with outstanding domestic-violence related offences including two counts of common assault (DV) and two counts of stalk/intimidate intend fear physical harm (DV).
The Concord West man was refused bail to appear before Parramatta Bail Court today (Saturday 20 March 2021).
