A man will appear in court today, charged following a police pursuit in the state's Central Tablelands.
About 7.45pm on Friday (1 May 2020), officers attached to Chifley Police District were patrolling the Bathurst CBD, when they saw a Holden Commodore on Rocket Street. Checks revealed the registration plates did not match the vehicle.
The Holden stopped at a service station on Stewart Street and officers approached the vehicle on foot where it reversed and drove directly towards the officers.
The vehicle allegedly struck a senior constable and he landed on the bonnet. The driver continued to drive away and the officer was thrown from the vehicle, landing on the ground.
The officer sustained minor injuries and was as taken to Bathurst Hospital for treatment.
Further police attended to assist and attempted to stop the Holden on Peel Street; however, the vehicle failed to stop, and a pursuit was initiated.
The vehicle was pursued through several streets in Bathurst and is alleged to have collided with a police vehicle before stopping near a unit complex on Rocket Street.
The driver fled on foot and was found a short distance away hiding under a stairwell in the unit complex.
The 36-year-old man was arrested and taken to Bathurst Police Station, where he was charged with:
- Police pursuit - not stop - drive dangerously (Skye's law)
- Never licensed person drive vehicle on road
- Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous
- Use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention
- Unlawfully possess number plates
- Resist officer in execution of duty
- Use class A vehicle with unauthorised number plate affixed
- Use unregistered registrable Class A motor vehicle on road
- Use uninsured motor vehicle
- Use vehicle on road unregistered
The man was refused bail to appear at Dubbo Local Court today (Monday 4 May 2020).
