Police charge man with rock pool robbery - Towradgi

A man will face court today charged with robbing and detaining a man at a rock pool near Wollongong at the weekend.

About 2.30am on Sunday 17 January 2021, a 67-year-old man was cleaning public space near the Towradgi rock pools, when he was approached and chased into the sand dunes by a younger man.

The younger man allegedly demanded cash, before assaulting the older man multiple times.

The older man, fearing for his safety, offered the younger man cash from his home.

The pair walked to the older man's unit, where the younger man allegedly stole a gold bracelet and bank card, before demanding the older man accompany him to withdraw cash from a nearby service station.

While the younger man was withdrawing cash, the older man sought assistance and contacted police.

Officers from Wollongong Police District attended and commenced inquiries.

Following inquiries, a search warrant was executed at a home in Fairy Meadow about 1.15pm yesterday (Monday 18 January 2021), where clothing and other items were seized for forensic examination.

A short time later, a 20-year-old man was arrested at the home and taken to Wollongong Police Station, where he was charged with assault with intent to rob, take/detain person with intent to obtain advantage, aggravated break and enter and commit serious indict offence – deprive liberty, and aggravated robbery.

He was refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court today (Tuesday 19 January 2021).
