Police charge man with tobacco importation - Campsie

A man has been charged with tobacco importation after a search warrant was executed in Sydney's southwest yesterday.

About 12.30pm (Thursday 27 April 2023), emergency services were called to a home on Byron Street, Campsie, following reports of a fire.

After Fire and Rescue NSW officers extinguished a blaze inside the home, a large amount of tobacco products were found.

Officers from Campsie Police Area Command established a crime scene and executed a search warrant at the property, seizing 800kg of tobacco products worth an estimated potential street value of $3 million.

A 31-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Campsie Police Station.

He was charged import tobacco products reckless to defrauding of revenue.

Police will allege in court that the man had been selling tobacco that was illegally imported into Australia.

The man was granted bail to appear at Bankstown Local Court on Tuesday 23 May 2023.
