Police charge teens over pursuit in stolen vehicle in Sydney CBD

Four teenagers will appear in court today charged following a pursuit in a stolen vehicle in Sydney's CBD overnight.

Just before 1.30am (Monday 4 April 2022), officers attached to City East Traffic and Highway Patrol were patrolling New South Head Road, Rose Bay, when they detected a Mercedes being driven at 100 kmph in a sign posted 60kph zone.

Checks revealed the Mercedes had reportedly been stolen from a Belrose home between 6.30pm on Monday 28 and 7.30am on Tuesday 29 March 2022.

Police attempted to stop the Mercedes at Double Bay, near the intersection of Kiaora Road.

When the Mercedes failed to stop, a pursuit was initiated, travelling westbound through the Cross City tunnel.

Upon exiting the tunnel, the Mercedes has failed to negotiate a bend, crashing into a dividing barrier.

The occupants fled on foot and were arrested shortly after with the assistance of officers attached to Sydney City Police Area Command and PolAir.

The four teenagers were taken to Day Street Police Station.

The 18-year-old driver was charged with police pursuit - not stop - drive recklessly, drive conveyance taken without consent of owner, and never licensed person drive vehicle on road.

The three passenger's – two aged 15 and a 19-year-old - were each charged with be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner, and breach of bail.

They were all refused bail. The two teens, aged 18 and 19, will appear at Central Local Court today (Monday 4 April 2022). The two teens, aged 15, will appear at a children's court today.
