Police charge two after correctional officer assaulted, detained - Mid North Coast

Two men have been charged following a serious assault and wounding at a correctional centre on the Mid North Coast last year.

About 12.10pm on Saturday 19 December 2020, police will allege two inmates – aged 20 and 23 – armed themselves with makeshift weapons and held two NSW Correctional Officers against their will within a room at a facility near Kempsey.

One officer managed to escape a short time later and called for additional resources.

Police will further allege the remaining officer was assaulted and stabbed several times over several hours.

Following negotiations and assistance from the NSW Corrective Services Special Operations Group, the situation was resolved shortly before 6pm.

The correctional officer was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Port Macquarie Base Hospital for treatment to a fractured eye socket, a punctured left lung, multiple lacerations, bruising and significant chemical burns.

Officers from Mid North Coast Police District were notified and commenced an investigation into the incident.

Following extensive inquiries, about 9.30am today (Thursday 4 February 2021), detectives attended Goulburn Police Station and arrested two men, aged 20 and 23.

Both were charged with seven offences, including:

  • Cause wounding/grievous bodily harm to person with intent to murder
  • Detain person in company with intent to obtain advantage
  • Cause grievous bodily harm to law enforcement officer reckless as to actual bodily harm
  • Take/detain in company with intent to get advantage occasion actual bodily harm
  • Assault law enforcement (not police) inflict actual bodily harm
  • Intentionally or recklessly destroy or damage property in company (x2)

Both men were remanded in custody to appear at Kempsey Local Court via AVL on Monday 8 February 2021.
