Police Crack Down on Boxing Day Car Cruise Risks

Police detected serious traffic offences, including extreme speeding and dangerous driving, during a road safety operation on Boxing Day.

Police conducted Operation Boxing Day Car Cruise from 4pm until midnight on Friday 26 December, deploying enforcement across the western peninsula, including Outer Harbor and Semaphore.

A large number of vehicles travel the western coastal route each year, with spectators lining roads and nearby areas. This year, the event is estimated to have attracted around 1,000 vehicles and approximately 2,000 spectators.

During the operation, police issued 83 expiations and nine immediate loss of licence notices, with eight vehicles also impounded and 30 defected as part of targeted enforcement.

Police also conducted 337 breath tests, detecting two drivers over the prescribed alcohol limit, and six drivers returned a positive roadside drug test.

Just after 7.40pm, a 20-year-old Hope Valley man was detected travelling at 142km/h in a 60km/h zone on Victoria Road at Osborne. He was reported for Extreme Speed and Speed Dangerous, issued a 12-month immediate loss of licence, and his vehicle was impounded for 28 days and defected.

Superintendent Shane Johnson, Traffic Services Branch said it is extremely disappointing that some drivers continue to put lives at risk by speeding, driving dangerously, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

"Police will continue to target these types of events by providing a visible police presence and undertaking enforcement activities to keep road users safe," Superintendent Johnson said.
