Police experience on the Parole Board

The Hodgman Liberal Government is calling for expressions of interest from former police officers to join the Parole Board, following passage of legislation to amend the Corrections Act 1997.

Including a member with policing experience is an important measure to ensure community safety remains at the core of any Parole Board decision.

The amendment will fulfil a commitment made during the 2018 State election to introduce legislation to ensure that a member with policing experience is represented on the Parole Board, in the same way that a victims of crime representative has been included on the Board.

Police are at the frontline of crime in Tasmania and the amendment provides for a former police officer to have an active role in decisions made about prisoners’ suitability for parole.

The changes to the Corrections Act 1997 will come into effect on 1 July 2019.
