Police investigate fatal crash at Mount Direction, North-East Tasmania

Sadly, a man has died following a single vehicle crash in Mt Direction in north-east Tasmania this morning.

Our thoughts are with the man's family and loved ones at this sad time.

Police and emergency services were called to a single vehicle crash on Old Bangor Tram Road, Mt Direction, about 4.45am today.

On arrival, it was established that a white Mazda utility had collided with a tree, approximately 1km east of the intersection of Dalrymple Road and Old Bangor Tram Road. Sadly, the single male occupant and driver of the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Police including Northern Crash Investigation and Forensics, together with Ambulance Tasmania, Tas Fire and SES all attended the scene. Initial enquiries indicate that speed may have been a contributing factor.

Police remain at the scene at this time and Old Bangor Tram Road is currently closed whilst investigations continue.

Police are speaking with the family of man involved, who is believed to be aged 57 and from the greater Launceston area.

Police would like to thank the man that came across the crash and rendered medical assistance to the deceased.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
