Police investigate man masturbating on 86 tram

Transit Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for public assistance after a man exposed himself to a woman on the 86 tram in Fitzroy on 15 August, Victoria Police say.

Investigators have been told a woman was on the city-bound tram when a man approached her and began masturbating in front of her just after 8am.

The 25-year-old St Albans woman was physically unharmed.

The man was acting erratically and then approached a second woman, a 22-year-old from Fitzroy, and sat down opposite her.

The unidentified man reached over and punched the woman in the arm.

The woman sustained bruising to the arm that did not require treatment.

One of the victims got off the tram at the intersection of Napier and Gertrude Streets in Fitzroy at 8.15am.

The second woman got off the tram at Swanston Street about 8.20am.

It is believed the man exited the tram a short time later near Parliament Station about 8.25am.

Police would like to speak to two men who intervened in the assault and any other witnesses who may be able to assist police with their enquiries.

The man is perceived to be Caucasian in appearance with a thin build, and was wearing a dark hoodie and black pants.

Police have released a computer generated image of the man in the hope someone recognises him and contacts Crime Stoppers.
