Police investigate New Year Eve assault in city

Officers from Melbourne East Police Station are investigating an assault which occurred in Melbourne on New Year's Eve.

Police have been told a man was standing on the footpath at the corner of Bourke and Elizabeth Street about 3.30pm on Tuesday 31 December.

A man brushed passed the victim and knocked his hands as he went by.

The victim chased after the man and pushed him in the back.

The man retaliated, took the victim to the ground and choked him until he was unconscious.

He left the area while the victim suffered an apparent seizure before regaining consciousness and leaving the area.

Police have released an image of a man that they believe may be able to assist with their enquires.
