Police have charged a 20-year-old man after the alleged sexual assault of a 26-year-old Cairns woman at Wangetti Beach yesterday.

It will be alleged around 9am a man approached a woman who was taking photos on the side of the Captain Cook Highway before striking up a conversation and requesting she drive him to his car.

The woman drove the man to his car and then agreed to walk with him on Wangetti Beach.

Police will allege, while on the beach, the man sexually assaulted the woman and attempted to rape her before she managed to flee from the beach.

A 20-year-old Kowanyama man has been charged with one count of assault with intent to rape.

He is expected to appear before the Cairns Magistrates Court on Monday July 6.
