Police investigate sexual assault in Melbourne laneway

Police are investigating a sexual assault that occurred in a laneway in the Melbourne CBD on 1 June.

A 19-year-old woman was walking east, through the laneway between Swanston and Russell streets, at 12.48am.

She was followed by an unknown man who grabbed and sexually assaulted her during a short scuffle.

She managed to break free and run away.

The victim was not physically injured.

Investigators have released an image of a man they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.

The man is perceived to be Caucasian with a medium build and a brown beard.

He was wearing a black flat peak cap, black hooded jumper with grey sleeves, black pants, runners and was carrying a blue bottle.
