Police investigate Werribee death

Police will investigate following a death in police custody in Werribee tonight, Victoria Police say.

Police attended a property on Kookaburra Avenue about 10.30am this morning as part of an investigation into an aggravated burglary.

The 35-year-old Werribee man attended a property in Hoppers Crossing about 10pm last night and entered that property with a firearm.

No one was injured.

The female occupant of that property recognised the man and contacted police to report the incident.

When police attended the Werribee property today, the man refused to let them enter.

No one else was inside the house.

While police did not see a firearm, the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) was called as a precaution given the incident the previous night.

The area was also evacuated and cordoned off.

CIRT, and later the Special Operations Group, attempted to negotiate with the man throughout the day.

A number of non-lethal tactical options were also deployed.

About 7.30pm police became concerned as they could no longer hear the man.

They then entered the property and found him deceased.

Professional Standards Command has been notified as per standard procedure and Homicide Squad detectives will also attend the scene to assist with the investigation.

The Coroner will also attend the scene tonight.
