Police are continuing to investigate an incident in the Nugent-Buckland area yesterday where the body of a deceased person was located inside a vehicle.
Acting Deputy Commissioner Adrian Bodnar said an investigation was ongoing to formally identify a person located deceased inside a Holden Colorado in bushland in the Buckland-Nugent area yesterday. This is expected to take several days.
"As you'd be aware, two weeks ago, there were two separate police shootings at Glenfern and New Norfolk," Acting Deputy Commissioner Bodnar said.
"These incidents involved three serving police members - luckily none of whom were physically injured but who were understandably shaken.
"Police were responding to a family violence incident at Glenfern when they were fired upon. Police have been seeking to locate 33 year old Robert Greig in respect to these allegations. We have previously circulated photographs of Mr Greig and the vehicle he was believed to be using, a blue Holden Colorado that had been recently repainted grey.
"Since that time, Tasmania Police has been actively investigating the incidents and seeking to locate Mr Greig, including following up information provided by members of the community."
Around 11.45am yesterday, police received a report from a member of the public that the vehicle of interest that may have been driven by Mr Greig was travelling on the Arthur Highway at Sorell.
Acting Deputy Commissioner Bodnar said that several police units were deployed to the area, including CIB, uniform, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Special Operations Group members.
"A short time later members deployed in the Westpac Rescue Helicopter saw the vehicle travelling north on Nugent Road towards Buckland," he said.
"A police unit set up at the intersection of Nugent and Kellevie Road deployed road spikes however the driver avoided the spikes by driving around them.
"The helicopter maintained observations of the vehicle as it continued north on Nugent Road, advising ground police units of its direction of travel.
"The helicopter observed the vehicle to leave Nugent Road and drive off-road into bushland where it travelled some distance over rough terrain before it came to a stop and was seen to catch fire.
"Due to the rough terrain, police arrived on the ground about 15 minutes later and confirmed the body of a single deceased occupant was located inside the vehicle. A process to formally identify the person is ongoing and anticipated to take several days."
The Tasmania Police Professional Standards Command and the Coroner attended the location last night and will fully investigate the matter.
"Police will fully investigate the circumstances leading to the man's death," Acting Deputy Commissioner Bodnar said.
"We would like to thank the members of the public who provided information and assistance over the past two weeks,"
Anyone who saw a blue/grey Holden Colorado traveling in/around Sorell yesterday is asked to contact police on 131 444.
Police will keep the family informed of any developments in the investigation, and prepare a report for the Coroner.
