Tasmania Police conducted speed checks on the Brooker Highway at Granton today where there is a reduced speed zone due to the preliminary construction works for the new Bridgewater Bridge. In just 2.5 hours, 25 motorists were detected well in excess of the sign posted 60 km/h limit, including a P-plate license holder travelling at 90 km/h.
Inspector Jim Semmens from Southern Road Policing Services said:
"Police organised for enforcement activity to occur due to reports of excessive speeding. Workers were present with machinery at the site and the reduced speed limit is there to protect both the workers and motorists. With one lane closed, the traffic conditions have changed, and the new speed limit is for everyone's safety."
"I am really disappointed with this result, not only the P-plate driver who was 30 km/h over the limit, but all the other drivers who were doing the wrong thing and will receive infringement notices.
"Motorists are just not heeding the message that reducing speed saves lives.
"This issue needs strong messaging; we are here to keep people safe and enough is enough. If motorists insist on exceeding the speed limit, then the Police insist on issuing infringements - there will be no cautions for this type of traffic offending.
"Motorists should be aware that the 'Enough is Enough' campaign will continue, and traffic operations will be occurring daily across all areas of Tasmania."
