The Road Policing Command will be out in force over the Easter weekend to crack down on driver behaviour and make our roads as safe as possible.
2018 saw 50 people killed on Northern Territory roads as a result of motor vehicle crashes and pedestrian strikes. The focus of this year's operation, commencing tomorrow, will be drink and drug driving, speeding, seatbelts and driver distraction.
"The road toll currently sits at eight compared to 18 this time last year," Commander Matthew Hollamby said.
"While this is a vast improvement in comparison, we have still lost eight people who should be with us today.
"It is well known that Easter traditionally sees a higher than usual number of motorists on the road, and people out and about.
"With so many people on holidays and enjoying everything the Territory has to offer, it is more important than ever for road users make good decisions and do their part to make the road a safe place for everyone.
"Police urge motorists to think before they drive and to consider their safety and the safety of others before getting into a vehicle.
"Plan ahead, arrange a Sober Bob if you're going to be drinking, and please make your driving the focus when behind the wheel.
"Expect more traffic and be patient.
"We want you to enjoy this Easter so you can enjoy next Easter, too."
